The Florida have sent 1B/3B Jorge Cantu to Texas for Double-A pitchers Evan Reed and Omar Poveda. The move will help Texas fill a hole at first base that was a result of the Rangers sending Justin Smoak to Seattle in the Cliff Lee deal. For the Marlins this is not a salary dump move, but rather getting what they can for a player who will be a free agent at the end of the year, and will not be resigned. Cantu, who was a fan favorite in Florida, for the year is hitting .262 with 10 homers and 54 RBIs, but he has been slumping as of late and about a third of his 16 errors have come in the last three weeks. Wes Helms, Donnie Murrphy, Emilio Bonifacio will all split time at third base for the Marlins until Chris Coghlan returns from the DL when he become the everyday third baseman.
